Creating a character.

One insanely hard part about writing is understanding your own characters. I think for me right now I have sort of naiveness towards my character because im just writing to write but how do I create a story without truly understanding the character for which im writing. I have to step in his/her shoes I have to become someone else or even multiple characters for the entirety of a book.
